Chapter Nine

This was bad.

I wouldn’t be able to keep the freaks from spreading into the base and fix the hole in the fence at the same time, and every second I waited for the others meant more freaks inside the perimeter of our base.

I fell back as I continued to fire at the freaks pouring through the gap in the fence, and the sound of the rapid-fire bullets drowned out all other noises.

If felt like I was in a slow-motion movie montage when the heroic man with a death wish puts his life on the line for his loved ones, but I wasn’t about to let these fuckers kill me. I’d survived way too much bullshit in this fucked-up world to let it end here, but I would do whatever it took to keep my people safe.

“Die, you fucking freaks!” I shouted over the noise as adrenaline flooded my veins.

As the flesh-hungry undead pushed through the hole in the fence, their croaks and twitches blended together into one big conjoined monster in my eyes, and it was hard to get headshots when they were so densely packed. I continued to retreat backward as I fired, but I was worried about how much ground I’d already given way to their advances into the base. I swayed the barrel of the gun from side to side in a sweeping motion that kept the freaks from getting too close to me, but this wasn’t a long-term solution.

Where were the others?

Were there more breaks in the fence they were dealing with?

My heart thudded in my chest like a war drum as I imagined multiple breaches in our perimeter, and I considered running back to the mess hall to check on the others myself. Then, as the freaks gained more space inside the fence line, I spotted a few roamers mixed in with the fast-paced ragers, and I felt a little better about our chances of pushing them back. The undead acted like pack animals, but the more decayed they were, the easier they were to eliminate.

“Adam!” Jess’ voice shouted from behind me. “Catch!”

I paused my firing to glance in the direction of my sister’s voice, and I saw everyone running across the sandy ground with guns in hand. My sister tossed me another magazine, and I took one hand off the gun just long enough to catch it and shove it into my back pocket. I was glad I’d started with a full mag, but I would have run out of ammo shortly, so they’d arrived in the nick of time.

Jess, Myers, Phoebe, and Malika spread out to my right, while Ellen, Grace, Sasha, Carl, and Maggie took my left flank, and together, we created a net around the hole in the fence. The freaks continued to flow through the gap, but several of them became stuck in the tangled chain links or blocked by the corpses I’d shot that covered the ground in piles.

“Try to clog up the hole!” I shouted, and I stepped forward to push the freaks back.
